| News (archived: 2005 (pre-September)) 12/10/2005: New 'Research' - Review on Maestro 510 Speakers They're pretty damn nice. Review here. 19/09/2005: New Program Well, first of all, LFI.net has reached 6000 hits. I have been working hard on my Programming Awards 2005 contest entry, SARA. There is still alot that needs to be done, but I'm pleased with my progress. After using VB .NET for so long though, I needed a break, and in the few hours rest I took I developed something for myself that I think others may find useful - It's called TabPad and it's written in Visual Basic 6. Basically it's a Notepad clone, but with tabs. Alot of Notepad replacements have alot of bulk built in, most of which I wouldn't need so I wrote something that suits me and probably others. Like most things I release, this is opensource, feel free to play with the code but if you rerelease the software it must be opensource, free, and credit me. Thanks 21/08/2005: Sorry for website neglect Sorry to everyone for neglecting the website - I probably have done some small updates in the time between the (published) update and this news post, but they would be small and insignificant. The battle-gotchi project is on an indefinate break. It was not my project to begin with, and my friend and I have just let it sit for now. I think he lost his copy of the code anyway. WinNap 2 has had a few new BETA builds released, and the feedback is good, one day I will get around to finishing it but for now, you'll have to share your ass off with it. I have entered into a Visual Basic programming contest called "Programming Awards 2005". It's for Victorian school students and it's sponsored by Microsoft, I believe. The bad news? It's Visual Basic .NET - a language I have the bare minimum experience with. The entry I will be assessed on is called SARA (It's an acronym of "Student Attendance Recording Application"), and it's primary purpose is to keep daily attendance info for each student and class, allowing teachers to mark students off using a PC. I have begun trying .NET, and alot of the basic functionability I enjoy in VB 6 is basically broken. No more simplistic control arrays, or intelligent "GotFocus" events (Yes, it has GotFocus but it works about as hard as well as a Hobo). So, I've begun planning the project instead, and doing experimentals in Visual Basic 6 and hoping I can convert them easily enough. I have done a basic list control which I hope to convert to .NET and you can try it out [link removed - try it later] (source code not available at this time, I may release it when the contest is over). NinAI is still functioning well, and is now fairly stable by comparison to earlier builds. The only code able to crash it is the externally written GetSSL code. Lately I've allowed people to tell their friends about the LFI.net MSN bot, NinAI. Although it has always been 'public', I have not really encourage friends or family to tell their friends about my creation. Since I have allowed it, there have been almost a dozen new users who have signed up, paying absolutely NO regard to the simplistic and short message presented to first time users. It's a joke to think that almost every new user canditate, although informed of what NinAI is, has tried to have a conversation with it, and even fought with the bot. From this point forward, I will not be helping people who should not be within 10 metres of a computer to use my bot - I will simply check over new 'registrations' weekly, and ban the idiots who fill the userbase with nicknames such as "hey" or "sup". As always, requests can be emailed to NinAI@lfi.net - and sorry to those who think it is unfair to judge a person by reading chatlogs with a bot, but I don't have time for 11 year olds who for some reason are using MSN. Oh, and I noticed a friend of mine set their nickname as "hey" for some reason, so from now on the user signup process does not accept any of the following: hi, hey, hello, sup[? .] or anything beginning with "who [space]", as in "who r u" I wasn't really sure whether or not it was feasible to publish that, but ahh well, NinAI (and LFI.net) are free services and I really don't have the time at the moment. Oh, and I might be getting a part time job soon. Wish me luck ;) (First prize for the Programming Awards 2005 is $5000) 6000 hits, here we come! 17/06/2005: New logo As you may have noticed, the site had a text version of the LFI.net logo for a while - this was because Real-DRAW Pro wasn't on my PC and I planned to change the template colours. This (template colour changes) hasn't happened yet, but I've put a transperent logo up (It's a PNG, so if you don't use Firefox it won't look good) which will make the transition easier (for me). This new blue logo looks much more crisp, in my opinion. The idea of the previous logo was to blend into the background of the back, and have LFI.net smudged into it (previous logo is here), and it served it's purpose - I like the idea of drawing attention to the website title now though. Not many updates have taken place, but my school exams are over (good results all around except Science) and holidays are approaching, giving me some time to code. I'll also update some source code (eg. the Winamp playlist code now handles networked files) and compiled projects. Thank's for staying tuned. We've nearly reached 5000 hits. By the way, if any advertisements you see on this page interest you, navigating through them to your desired site can raise a smudge of revenue for me :) (not saying to click away for the heck of it, as it's against the Google Rules). If you see any inappropriate ads (including ads leading to misleading sites) please email me their URL! I also fixed up the News archives a bit (linked back to Archive Index), and the links page (seperated links based on where the link goes). 5000 hits, here we come! -- Mike 02/06/2005: All is still well Yet another pointless news post - hey, why not? Exams are taking place at school, and although I haven't done all that much in the studying sense, I've still been busy. I missed hitting 4000 hits, and I was obviously too lazy to make a news entry about it, but the great thing is LFI.net has nearly reached 4500 Hits! We're 8 away, and they'll probably come by the time this is online, so CONGRATS VISITORS, and thank-you!. Battle-gotchi has made no progress. We (Christian and I) have played with the battling algorithm, but nothing final is available. Winnap 2 is still no where further. The site is still good - I have a list of things I hate now, which is pretty cool. I don't really want 'site regulars', if I have any, to get wrapped up in my personal beliefs, but check it out under the misc. section if you want to. 01/05/2005: All is well Happy 1st of May, anyone crazy enough to visit. At the moment, I don't have many projects on the go. Well, I do, but I'm not working very heavily on them. NinAI is still actively maintained, but I'm not really adding anything, just fixing any glitches or services that need repair. I have been working on my Filesharing client, so that it can download...It's based on the opennap protocol, and is build around the source code of the original Winnap. The current BETA supports uploading and has been a great way for me to share some photos from a recent holiday. Hopefully soon I will have downloading fully implemented, I'm working on it as I post this. What else is new? That's probably all I have to say right now. It was my birthday on the 10th of April, I was going to post and make some of my apps with "auto-update' features tell you, but my net connection was down. If you want to send me birthday cards or whatever, use my email on the Contact page. Thanks! :) 17/04/2005: Personal Connection Upgrade My home internet connection is now an unlimited 256/64 kilobit connection - this is the same connection I run the bot of so if there was any chance of the display pictures drawing alot of bandwidth it has now been resolved (Images are served from webspace, NinAI redirects users to a URL on LFI.net). This is cool :). 07/04/2005: Site and Software Update The programs navigation was getting cut off. I thought it was probably just Internet Explorer couldn't wrap the text - however when I checked it out using Firefox at home, the same issue occured. I checked the source of the compiled page and the text that wasn't appearing wasn't even in the HTML - Anyway, to cut a long story short, the code I was using to read INI files was reading at a max length of 500, so I made a new Build of Template It now reads up to 5000. Yay! Nearly my birthday too! (10th of April) Grab the update, it's mentioned in the footer and is in the Programs Catergory...Oh, and it turns out either way FireFox can't wrap the text so it is nolonger bold (Programs Navigation). 07/04/2005: Status Images Unavailable Today, I don't have an active internet connection. So, this news post will be delayed, and NinAI status images will be temporarily unavailable. I'm sorry for any inconvenience, I guess it's lucky only 3~ people use them! 21/03/2005: NinAI (LFI.net's Bot) Update I am obviously not going to post here everytime there is an update to these bot, as the list is almost endless (and can be requested from the bot using !changes). However, this update is fairly major - My bot now supports HTTP, and you can now use "Status Images" (you've probably seen them before on other forums) to show your personal MSN status. Below I have included my MSN Status. The Images are transperant PNG files, and you can feel free to use them on your website or any forums you visit, etc. The images are hosted here and are small so they should stand up fairly well to "high traffic". The bot is only on a slow (256/64) DSL connection. You can use this by visiting here. This has been implemented for about 10 days now but it was in a BETA stage. The BETA was successful. 07/03/2005: Updated some parts of the site The site has been updated a little, and I have updated the "Winamp Playlist Manager", so now it's cool. 26/02/2005: LFI.net's bot Well, I was looking through my old sourcecode for abandoned (and "smaller") projects, and I found the most up-to-date version of my old bot, "NinAI"'s Source code. The bot never worked properly when I was running it during development, but now it seems to work flawlessly, for the little feature-set it actually has. Currently, the bot is "BETA" - pretty much the only thing you can do is play Scrabble, but Scrabble ROCKS! So, for now, you can add the bot at "NinAI@lfi.net" and type !Scrabble to join the game. Be sure to leave feedback (!Feedback) about the bot too :) 27th of Feb 2005: Bot has been relocated. 26/02/2005: Small site update I plan to add a mini-section, "Pure Code", with small code examples or incomplete applications. The section is available now, but still empty, I will update it later. 21/02/2005: Site Update I actually uploaded the page today, and fixed a few more things (eg. I changed the text on the Programs page). Enjoy ;) 17/02/2005: Site Update This is only a small update - the previous news post was accidentally titled Happy New Year too, I fixed that ;). I have added a few more "sections" to the forum, with regard to the website. I'm also planning to write a small ASP script so people can contact me without the use of email, and a slightly modified version to leave comments on certain pages. :) 12/02/2005: Site Update Well, here we are. I have yet again updated the site. I will try to keep the sections cleaner and news posts shorter from now on. Here is a list of changes. I hope you enjoy the new site, if you see any issues please post on the forums which I will be expanding for Website support soon. 06/02/2005: Happy New Year HAPPY NEW YEAR! Sorry I haven't updated the site for so long, my Windows install died and I went away and sort of just 'left it be'. However the site will be updated often now - What to expect? A colour change, for one thing, and im going to try to keep the site a little more professional looking. |
